One of the biggest surprises we can experience in life is a knocked-out tooth! This kind of accident can happen in various ways, from running into a glass door to simply tripping over our feet on the sidewalk. If this were to happen to you, you’re likely to feel a bit alarmed and will wonder what you should do about it. Fortunately, there are certain actions you can take to save your tooth. Read on to learn three steps to follow if you have a knocked-out tooth in Vero Beach.

Step #1: Handle the Tooth Gently

The very first thing you should do if you get your tooth knocked-out is to remain calm. If you can, make sure to pick up your tooth by the crown, or the chewing surface you usually see. Try to avoid touching or damaging the roots, as doing so can reduce your chances of successfully saving it. If it has dirt on it, then rinse it carefully with water. You also shouldn’t use soap, scrub, or dry the tooth with a towel.

Step #2: Carefully Place Back in its Socket

Once you’ve cleaned off the tooth, your next step will be to preserve it. The best way to keep it moist is to reposition it back into its original socket, since the tooth’s root surface can’t tolerate outside exposure. By holding the crown, gently push it in using your fingers. If this is possible, then you can keep it still by either carefully biting down on it or holding it in place yourself. In the case that this doesn’t work, there are over-the-counter kits that help with dental emergencies for tooth preservation. You can also preserve it in a Ziploc bag with milk or by keeping it on the inside of your mouth between your gums and cheek. Avoid placing the tooth in water, as this can damage the roots.

Step #3: Immediately Visit Your Dentist

After you’ve knocked out a tooth, you should ideally go see your dentist within an hour, as this gives them the best chance to save it. In addition, your dentist will check your surrounding teeth to ensure there wasn’t extra damage done.

Following these steps can help you significantly if your tooth was dislodged or knocked-out completely. However, even with a chipped tooth, your dentist insists you pay a visit to make sure you’re able to preserve your complete smile!
